A Test Bed for Autonomous Formation Flying
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper outlines the design of an autonomous flying vehicle (AFV) for use in researching formation flying. Specifically, we have designed a small autonomous model helicopter as a reference vehicle. Once several more units have been constructed, these vehicles will form a test bed for formation experiments. In this paper various design decisions are presented as well as results from early testing of the reference design. A novel approach to relative localization within formations using just a single downward-pointing camera is discussed. Index Terms -Autonomous Flying Robots, Formations, Multiple Robot Coordination?

Developing a research autonomous plane for flying in a laboratory space is a challenge that forces one to understand the specific aerodynamic, power and construction constraints. In order to obtain a very slow flight while maintaining a high maneuverability, ultralight structures and adequate components are required. In this paper we analyze the wing, propeller and motor characteristics and pro...

An overview of an autonomous helicopter test-bed project at the Autonomous Robots Lab of the University of Southern California is presented. The core of this test-bed is a new autonomous helicopter, the Autonomous Flying Vehicle-II (AFV-II). The AFV-II is an evolution of the original AFV vehicle described in Lewis et al., (1993). The major features of the new vehicle system are: An on-board red...
